h1-tutorial-css poster

On nearly every website we build, we use a rather simple template created with the basic outline for building a website.  Here’s an example:

__________________________________________

/* Default style for h1 – h4 */  — we place headers in our css for reference

h1 {

font-size: 36px;

line-height: 38px;

font-weight: bold;

word-spacing: -.5px;

color: #CC0000;

margin: 0;

padding: 0;

letter-spacing: -1px;
}

h2 {

font-size: 28px;

line-height: 28px;

font-weight: normal;

word-spacing: -.5px;

color: #999999;

margin: 0;

padding: 0;

letter-spacing: -1px;

}

h3 {

font-size: 10px;

line-height: 14px;

font-weight: bold;

word-spacing: -.125px;

margin: 0;

padding: 0;

font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;

}

h4 {

font-size: 9px;

line-height: 11px;

font-weight: normal;

word-spacing: -0.125px;

margin: 0;

padding: 0;

font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;

}

____________________________________
/* Default style for H1 */
h1 {
font-size: 12px;
font-weight: bold;
line-height: 14px;
word-spacing: -.5px;
color: #CC0000;
margin: 0;
padding: 0;
}
h2 {
font-size: 36px;
font-weight: normal;
line-height: 28px;
word-spacing: -.5px;
color: #999999;
margin: 0;
padding: 0;
letter-spacing: -1px;
}
h3 {

font-weight: bold;
line-height: 14px;
word-spacing: -.125px;

padding: 0;
font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;
}
h4 {
font-size: 10px;
font-weight: normal;
line-height: 13px;
word-spacing: -0.125px;

padding: 0;
font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;

It’s h1 and h2 defaults that are best categorized by Google.
Outlining and defining your “H’s” does nothing for SEO until you apply the styles to your headlines and body.  The H1 tag is read by Google as a default and is given higher preference over your own defined styles such as “HEAD.”  Google will rip and read your H1 and H2′s faster and better because it’s a default setting.

Now, if we really want to get picky – Google will read all html text using any style heading – but the H1 thru H6 is a built in default setting – how fast can you say algorithm?

metaheads2

Simple Meta Head Upgrade.
In order to update your metaheads or look at them choose “view source,” on your home page – again – your home page is the most important page to optimize.  Copy and paste the metahead format below and update with your information –  your title tag is located just above the beginning metaheads and is extremely important in proper SEO.  The order of the metaheads is not important.

A word on “Title Tags.”
When  adding the new metatags, look at your title tags – they are right at the top. Google allows 66 characters to be displayed in the natural search page – but it reads and uses than 66 in search selection. Yahoo! can display an absolute 120 characters.  I suggest writing 120 characters for best optimization, but know exactly how 66 characters display.

{COPY META INFO AND PASTE INTO YOUR WEBSITE: }
<meta name=”site” content=”Hotwire Advertising and Website Design” />

<meta name=”robots” content=”index,follow” />
<meta name=”Googlebot” content=”All” />
<meta name=”revisit-after” content=”7_days” />

<meta name=”Description” content=”Hotwire Advertising and Website Design specializes in print and television advertising, website design, graphic design, email marketing and Google Adword advertising.” />

<meta name=”author” content=”Kenneth Sven Boostrom/>
<meta name=”rating” content=”General”/>
<meta name=”distribution” content=”global”/>
<meta name=”resource-type” content=”document”/>

<meta name=”keywords” content=”website designer ri, website designer providence, website designer boston, website design ri, website design providence, website design mass, website design boston, website consultant boston, web designer ri, web designer providence, web designer mass, web designer boston, web design ri, web design providence, web design mass, web design boston, kenn boostrom, graphic design ri, graphic design providence, graphic design mass, graphic design boston, full service advertising, e-marketing providence, email marketing providence, advertising website, advertising web design, advertising design, advertising consultant boston “/>

<meta name=”copyright” content=”Hotwire Advertising and Website Design, Boston Massachusetts Graphic Designer Web Designer”/>

Not sure what to write into your Metahead for SEO upgrade?
Using the Hotwire number one rule of “get it going,” search your competitor and view their source.  Copy the keywords and pay special note to their title – then paste it into your website home page – it’s called Hotwired Open Source SEO.  The only thing missing is a spark and having the engine turn on.

Optimize your website searches – turn on Google Image Search in webmaster tools

mass-civil-litigation-law

A GREAT BUT LITTLE KNOWN feature in Google Webmaster Tools lets Google search your images in your website. Naming your images becomes extremely important in this feature so remember to always-use-dashes between words when naming files – use only “dashes.” Naming the html file in the same manner is highly recommended.

Recently while building a website for a law firm, we used stock photography for some headers. Instead of naming an image “gavel,” we used “mass-civil-litigation-law.”  The image is wonderful, but the SEO is fabulous. The html page for this image ”mass-civil-litigation-law,” is “…/civil-litigation.html and the page title is “Civil Litigation in Attleboro, MA | Coogan Smith.  All three items build up a higher keyword page ratio for optimal search engine performance.  Update keyword meta tags and you have a finely tuned page.

Image searches can ad thousands of extra hits per year on your website.  Google has enhanced image search to the next level of image finding.  Naming your image is important.

Next turn on Image Search
In your Google Webmaster Tools select your website and go to “settings.” There you will see Image Search – select the check box “Include my site in Google Image Labeler.” Naturally, you already have an “sitemap.xml,” file required for proper Google search inclusion. And your website is registered – right?

Name your Images Correctly
I know I’ve said this but naming your images accurately, literally, and with purpose gets the best results.  If someone searches for “best golf course,” and your picture is a good photo – then users tend to stay longer or click on those google adwords.  I hope you find this post useful.

Basic Search Engine Optimization
and SEO for your website.

Monday, May 25th, 2009

Let’s discuss how Google and most search engines find your website. Search engine robots read like us – top down – left to right.  Real people start in the top left corner and then zig/zag from the largest type or image and leave the page bottom right.  Robots read down like running water on a large cookie sheet.  So start your home page with proper title tags. The home page is the most important page in your website.  What you write in your title tag should be found in your meta description, your H1 headline and your first two hundred character html text description on your home page. Google only displays around 60 to 70 characters so limit length to 65 characters for best natural search display or know where is ends.

Title Tags – First step to being found.
The title tags are the first thing a robot reads. Use the title to brand your company, sell a product or show your location.

Title Tag: SwimEx is Descriptive
• Your Company Name – this is what we do

SwimEx for example uses its title bar more as a description. Google may only display 65 characters but it reads more than it displays.

titletag-how-to-doTitle Tag:  Little Harbor Yacht Brokers is both descriptive and gives location.
• Company name – what they do – and where you can find them.

Little Harbor Yachts title tag is set up as a locational title tag. Sometimes this is important to a company.  It’s very important in local searches such as “Providence Jewelry Store” – but not important for a “Lap Pools.”

Every page on your website can be optimized for one or two key word phrases – so the larger your website the better.

Using Proper Dividers in Title Tags and Images.
Use the “|” symbol with space before and after. Don’t use the arrow “>” as it means nothing to the robots. Do use or hyphen “-”. The hyphen is read as a space by the Google. For example the names of the images in this story are “title-tags-how-to.jpg” Google reads this as “title tags how to.” Especially use a hyphen in image naming. We prefer the “|” or “the pipe bar as divider of choice.

Little Harbor Yacht Brokers website launched – over 200 pages!

The Little Harbor website is a large global website with customers. The site is Search Engine Optimized and is already seeing visitors viewing twice as many pages as the previous website. The contact form is used to validate print advertising.
